Open Book: Ontario thanks Thunder Bay blogger Joan Baril for championing the achievements of her community's historical writers.
The Thunder Bay Museum is home to a small but lively book shop where residents and tourists alike can find a wealth of local memoirs and history books. The Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society's Publications Awards have been established to recognize the excellence of local writers and encourage new authors to delve into the rich history of Northwestern Ontario.
Congratulations to this year's winners!
- Jean Morrison's Labour Pains: Thunder Bay's Working Class in Canada's Wheat Boom won the M. Elizabeth Arthur Award for best full-length scholarly work
- William Vinh-Doyle's ?A Study of the Strike at Canada Safeway by Local 175 of the UFCW,? won the J.P. Bertrand Award for best scholarly article
- Neil McQuarrie's Dances on Fire won the Gertrude H. Dyke Award for best full-length popular work
- Eleanor Dolores Dickey's "A Memorial Society?s Struggle with the Funeral Industry" won the George B. Macgillivray Award for best popular article
