The Stones

Cairn stones - cornerstone and ground

Designed to reflect the strength of both homestead and church, the Black History Cairn literally traces the route travelled by African American slaves—the stones used in the construction of the monument were obtained from Africa, American slave and free states, and border points that marked the journey. The stones set into the ground in front of the “cornerstone” reflect the coded messages that were sewn into quilts, such as the North Star, which guided slaves northward to freedom in Canada.
