Commenting on the poem in an interview, he told us:
"Essentialist is the first [poem] positing, or at least playing with the notions of transcendental thought or idealist thought, which has taken a bad rap the last thirty years or so in theory, in politics, and what have you.
"The book posits the possibility that there is some kind of spirit or geist or essence to the human."
