The Danforth: Greektown

Share |

The plaque for Ondaatje's In the Skin of a Lion is on the Bloor Viaduct right at the beginning of the Danforth (the view from this picture is looking east on Danforth Avenue). The area is also known as Greektown (although it is a very cosmopolitan neighbourhood), as in the early 1970’s Canada welcomed thousands of Greek citizens to this area of the Danforth. As a tribute to the numbers of Hellenic citizens who lived and worked in the area, the Business Improvement Area voted to change the name to Greektown on the Danforth in 1993. The very popular Taste of the Danforth festival is the largest Greek festival in the world outside of Greece.
