Last night the Writers? Trust of Canada presented their annual slate of literary awards, giving out $139,000.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the inaugural Latner Writers? Trust Poetry Prize. The $25,000 award will be presented annually to a poet to recognise an exceptional body of work. Last night, the first ever Latner Writers' Trust Poetry Prize was awarded to Ken Babstock.
Miriam Toews received the $25,000 Rogers Writers? Trust Fiction Prize for All My Puny Sorrows, a book that has been generating widespread praise since its publication. Toews' moving acceptance speech had the crowd at the Glenn Gould Theatre transfixed, and she got big laughs when she mentioned her mother was unable to attend the ceremony as she was at a Toronto Raptors game down the street.
Three body of work awards were also presented:
Joan Thomas won $25,000 Writers? Trust Engel/Findley Award
Susan Musgrave won the $20,000 Matt Cohen Award: In Celebration of a Writing Life
Cary Fagan won the $20,000 Vicky Metcalf Award for Literature for Young People
In addition, the $10,000 Writers? Trust/McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize, known for identifying writers who will go on to become household names in Canadian literature, went to Tyler Keevil for ?Sealskin,? a short story set in a fish processing plant in the Burrard Inlet, British Columbia.
The event, which was attended by 300 guests from the literary, arts and media communities, was hosted by the arts editor of The Globe and Mail, Jared Bland.
