The Daughter's Way, by Tanis MacDonald

Tanis MacDonald, an associate professor at Wilfrid Laurier University and a writer of three books of poetry, is a finalist for the 2012 Gabrielle Roy Prize for her book The Daughter’s Way: Canadian Women’s Paternal Elegies (Wilfrid Laurier University Press). This book “investigates negotiations of female subjectivity in 20th-century Canadian women’s elegies with a special emphasis on the father’s death as a literary and political watershed” and examines the work of some of the most well-known Canadian female poets, including Dorothy Livesay, P.K. Page, Jay Macpherson, Margaret Atwood, Kristjana Gunnars, Lola Lemire Tostevin, Anne Carson and Erin Mouré.

The Gabrielle Roy Prize was established by The Association for Canadian and Québec Literatures (ACQL) in honour of the late Gabrielle Roy, a French Canadian writer from Saint Boniface, Manitoba. Each year, the association awards English-language and French-language works of criticism on Canadian or Québec literature that have been published anywhere in the world.

The winner of the award will be announced on June 1st, 2013 at a reception at the Association for Canadian and Québec Literatures’ annual conference in Victoria, British Columbia.
