A Brimful of Asha, by Asha and Ravi Jain

Recently, Jian Ghomeshi chatted with a real-life mother and son, Ravi and Asha Jain, the authors of A Brimful of Asha (Playwrights Canada Press), about their opposing views towards arranged marriage. A Brimful of Asha tells the tale of how Ravi?s parents surprised him while he was vacationing in India with the purpose of arranging his marriage. At this stage in his life, he was recently graduated and looking to enter the theatre scene, but his mother felt it was time that he settle down.

In the interview, a fascinating discussion about their differing views on arranged marriage ensued, reflecting what one might expect if they are familiar with the book. Despite not agreeing with arranged marriage, Ravi mentioned that wanted to write the book in order to let Canadians hear and understand his mother?s point-of-view, since arranged marriage has such negative connotations within Canada. The writers also gave an indication of the humorous stories that can be found in A Brimful of Asha. Listen to this mother and son discuss being caught between two cultures and their differing ideas about marriage at the CBC website.
