You might think that the Governor General's Library would have been the best place to locate the titles that have been honoured with the award by the same name...but until recently, the collection was far from complete.

It wasn't until this year, which marks the 75th Anniversary of the Governor General's Literary Awards, that a complete collection of award-winning books from 1936 to the present has been available. The Rt. Hon. Adrienne Clarkson was determined to fill the library with the missing titles, but she couldn't do it alone.

As Bonnie Jaskula, a Rideau Hall guide, explains, ?Ms. Clarkson, at an awards ceremony for the Governor General?s Literary Awards, set the task to the recipients and guests at the event to go out and to find the books. Authors, publishers, editors, everyone was involved in scouring Canada and collecting all of the missing titles. Today, the collection is complete, and the Canada Council for the Arts, who administers the award, presents a copy to the Governor General here at Rideau Hall.?

To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Governor General's Literary Awards, current Governor General David Johnston and his wife, Sharon, launched a reading series at Rideau Hall that will continue throughout the summer. Every Thursday and Saturday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m, book lovers and their families are invited to come out and celebrate great Canadian writing.
