In 2008, freelance writer Doreen Barnes, author and columnist Russ Disotell, Brockville Public Library head librarian Margaret Williams, and retired entrepreneur Valerie Kines realized that there was an abundance of talented authors in the Brockville area. They decided to put together an event that would promote and showcase this local talent and bring writers and readers together. And so, in 2009, the Thousand Islands Writers Festival was born.

The festival, which is held annually in Brockville, has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm and support from community leaders in business and the arts, as well as from the more than 250 published authors who live in the region. The 2010 author line up includes Alissa York, Charlotte Gray, Elizabeth Kelly, R. J. Harlick, Janet Kellough, John Moss, Tish Cohen, Roy MacSkimming, and Sarah Perry.

Brockville – “City of the Thousand Islands” – is ideally located to host such an event as it attracts people from the Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto regions, as well as from the north-eastern United States. Brockville's historic downtown boasts a number of heritage sites, the perfect venues for festival events.

The Thousand Islands Writers Festival has one ultimate goal: to promote, expand, and sustain the art of writing. To learn more about the festival and this year's wonderful line up of events, please visit http://www.tiwfestival.org/.
