Toronto Islands

As much a part of Toronto's waterfront as The Beaches, Toronto's Islands are rich in history and the only group of islands on the west part of Lake Ontario. They are formed from the same land deposits associated with the Scarborough Bluffs

Prior to colonization, the islands were important areas to Ojibwa and Mississauga first nations - both as a healthy environment for the sick to recuperate in, and as sacred lands. With colonization, the islands became a tourist destination and recreational favourite of locals, offering hiking, beaches, and resort hotels. Though most of the resort era is long gone, there are some landmarks still standing, and plenty of boardwalk and trails to walk.

The islands are accessed by a ferry service, and also an underwater pedestrian walkway to be completed in 2014.
