Founded by Edward Fisher 1886 as The Toronto Conservatory of Music, the institution was the first of its kid: a school dedicated to the education of singers and musicians. In its early days it was associated with The University of Toronto and experienced a high rate of growth, causing it to purchase property and College Street and University Ave to accommodate its rapid expansion.
In 1947 King George VI awarded the school a royal charter, to honor its standing as one of the best music schools in the Commonwealth. From then, the school became The Royal Conservatory of Music and functioned - for the most part - as an independent entity.
Today, the intitution is housed in McMaster Hall and offers diverse musical studies and teaching methods. Educating thousands over its lifespan, The Conservatory boasts alumni such as: Glen Gould, Paul Shaffer, Diana Krall, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sarah McLachlan, and Jeff Healey.
