Portsmouth Village

Founded in 1784 by British Loyalists, Portsmouth is a small village and now an annexed neighbourhood of Kingston, Ontario. With the establishment of the Kingston Penitentiary, the village grew until its eventual incorporation in 1858. The town hall, penitentiary, and asylum are all the remain of this era; the tanneries, breweries and shipyards have been replaced with an Olympic Harbour. Still, the village retains its heritage feel and is a quaint stop in one of Canada's most historic cities.
